Yard Smarts Question of the Week:

How do I get rid of moss in my lawn?

Moss is a primitive plant with a soft, velvety texture, which can grow quite thickly over soil surfaces, even choking out grass. The best way to control moss is to take away what it needs - shade and moisture – and create better growing conditions for your lawn to thrive. If possible, trim back some branches on nearby trees to let more light reach the soil surface. Follow good lawn management practices, including mowing, watering and fertilizing correctly. This will promote a strong lawn that can squeeze out intruding plants such as moss. You can apply moss control products (available at your home and garden center) that contain lime, iron or copper, which will alter the soil pH in the mossy area, creating a soil environment damaging to moss. Like any unwelcome plant, it’s best to go after it when it is most actively growing. In the case of moss, wait until next spring.
